Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a narration of the things that have been accomplished among us,

Quoniam quidem multi conati sunt ordinare narrationem quae in nobis conpletae sunt rerum

According as they have delivered them unto us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word:

sicut tradiderunt nobis qui ab initio ipsi uiderunt et ministri fuerunt sermonis

It seemed good to me also, having diligently attained to all things from the beginning, to write to thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

uisum est et mihi adsecuto a principio omnibus diligenter ex ordine tibi scribere obtime Theofile

That thou mayest know the verity of those words in which thou hast been instructed.

ut cognoscas eorum uerborum de quibus eruditus es ueritatem ∴

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zachary, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elizabeth.

fuit in diebus Herodis regis Iudae sacerdos quidam nomine Zacharias de fice Abia et uxor illi de filiabus Aron et nomen eius Elizabeth ∙

And they were both just before God, walking in all the commandments and justifications of the Lord without blame.

erant autem iusti ambo ante dm incedentes in omnibus mandatis et iustificationibus dni sine quaerella

And they had no son, for that Elizabeth was barren: and they both were well advanced in years.

et non erat illis filius eo quod esset Elizabeth sterilis et ambo praecessisent in diebus suis

And it came to pass, when he executed the priestly function in the order of his course before God,

factum est autem cum sacerdotio fungeretur Zacharias in ordinem uicis suae ante dm

According to the custom of the priestly office, it was his lot to offer incense, going into the temple of the Lord.

saecundum consuetudinem sacerdoti sorte exiit ut incensum poneret ingressus in templum dni ∴

And all the multitude of the people was praying without, at the hour of incense.

et omnis multitudo erat populi horans foris horac incensi

1

And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

apparuit autem illi angelus dni stans a dextris altaris incensi ∴

1

12

And Zachary seeing him, was troubled: and fear fell upon him.

et Zacharias turbatus est uidens et timor inruit super eum

1

13

But the angel said to him: Fear not, Zachary, for thy prayer is heard: and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son. And thou shalt call his name John.

ait autem ad illum angelus dicens ne timeas Zacharia: quoniam ecce audita est depraecatio tua et uxor tua Elizabeth pariet tibi filium ∙ et uocabis nomen eius Iohannem

And thou shalt have joy and gladness: and many shall rejoice in his nativity.

et erit tibi gaudium et exsultio et multi in natiuitate eius gaudebunt ∙

For he shall be great before the Lord and shall drink no wine nor strong drink: and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

erit enim magnus coram dno et uinum et sicera non bibet et spu sco replebitur replebitur adhuc ex utero matris suae

And he shall convert many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.

et multos filiorum Israhel conuertet ad dnm dm ipsorum

And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias: that he may turn the hearts of the fathers unto the children and the incredulous to the wisdom of the just, to prepare unto the Lord a perfect people.

et ipse praedet ante illum in spu et uirtute Heliae ut conuertat corda patrum in filios et incredibiles ad prudentiam iustorum ∙ parare dno plebem perfectam

And Zachary said to the angel: Whereby shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.

et dixit Zacharias ad angelum unde hoc sciam ego enim sum senex et uxor mea praecessit in dieb: suis

And the angel answering, said to him: I am Gabriel, who stand before God and am sent to speak to thee and to bring thee these good tidings.

et respondit angelus dixit ei ego sum Gabrihel qui adsto ante dm et missu sum loqui ad te et haec tibi euangelizare

And behold, thou shalt be dumb and shalt not be able to speak until the day wherein these things shall come to pass: because thou hast not believed my words, which shall be fulfilled in their time.

et ecce eris tacens et non poteris loqui usque in diem quo haec fiant pro eo quod non credidisti uerbis meis quae inplebuntur in tempore suo ∙

And the people were waiting for Zachary: and they wondered that he tarried so long in the temple.

Et erat plebs exspectans Zachariam et mirabantur quod tardaret ipse in temple ∙

And when he came out, he could not speak to them: and they understood that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he made signs to them and remained dumb.

Egressus autem non poterat loqui ad illos et cognouerunt quod uissionem uidisset in templo et ipse erat innuens illis et permansit mutus

And it came to pass, after the days of his office were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

et Factum est ut inpleti sunt dies officii eius ∙ abit in domum suam

And after those days, Elizabeth his wife conceived and hid herself five months, saying:

post hos autem dies concepit Elitzabeth uxor eius et occultabat se mensibus quinque dieens

Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he hath had regard to take away my reproach among men.

quia sic mihi fecit dns in diebus quibus respexit auferre obprobrium meum inter homines

And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,

in mense autem sexto mussus est angelus Gabrihel a do in ciuitatem Galilee ∙ Cui nomen Natzareth

To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David: and the virgin's name was Mary.

ad uirginem disponsatam uiro cui nomen erat Ioseph de domo Daud et nomen uirginis Maria

And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

et ingresus angelus ad eam benedixit aue gratia plena dns tecum benedicta tu inter mulieres ∙

Who having heard, was troubled at his saying and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be.

Quae cum audisset turbata est in sermone eius et cogitabat quails esset ista locutio

And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God.

et ait angelus ei ne timeas Maria ipsa autem cum uidisset mirata est introitu eius et erat cogitant quid sic benedixisset eam et dixit ei angelus dni noli timere Maria inuenisti enim gratiam apud dm

Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb and shalt bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name Jesus.

et ecce concipiens in utero et paries filium et uocabis nomen eius ihm ∙

He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father: and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever.

haec erit magnus et filius altissimi uocabitur et dabit illi dns ds sedem Dauid patris sui

And of his kingdom there shall be no end.

et regnabit in domo Iacob in aeternum et regni eius non erit filis ∙

And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man?

Dixit autem Maria ad angleum quomodo fiet istud quoniam uirum non cognosco

And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren.

et ecce Elizabeth cognata tua et ipsa concepit filium in senecta sua ∙ et hic mensis est sextus illi quae uocatur sterelis

Because no word shall be impossible with God.

quia non erit inpossibile apud dm omne uerbum

And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord: be it done to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

dixit autem Maria ecce ancella dni fiat mihi saecundum uerbum tuum ∙ Et discessit ab illa angelus

And Mary rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Juda.

exsurgens autem Maria in diebus illis abiit in montana cum festinatione in ciuitatem Iuda

And she entered into the house of Zachary and saluted Elizabeth.

et intrauit in domum Zachariae et salutauit Elizabeth

And it came to pass that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost.

Et factum est ut audiuit salutationem Mariae Elizabeth exsultauit infans in utero eius et repleta est spu sco Elizabeth

And she cried out with a loud voice and said: Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

Et clamauit uoce magna et dixit benedicta inter mulieres et benedictus fructus uentris tui ∙

And whence is this to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

et unde hoc mihi ut ueniat mater dni mei ad me

1

44

For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.

ecce ut facta est uos salutationis tuae in auribus meis exsultauit in gaudio infans in utero meo ∙

45

And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord.

Et beata quae credidit quoniam perficientur ea quae dicta sunt ei a dno

And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord.

et ait Maria Magnificat anima mea dnm

1

47

And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

et exsultauit sps meus in do salutari meo

1

48

Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid: for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

quia respexit humitatem ancellae suae ecce enim ex hoc beatam me dicent omnes generationes

49

Because he that is mighty hath done great things to me: and holy is his name.

quia fecit mihi magna qui potens est et scm nomen eius

1

50

And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him.

et misericordia eius in progenies et progenies timentibus eum

1

He hath shewed might in his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.

fecit potentiam in brachio suo dispersit superbos mente cordis sui

1

52

He hath put down the mighty from their seat and hath exalted the humble.

depossuit potentes de sede et exaltauit humiles

1

He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away.

essurientes inpleuit bonis et diuites dimissit inanes ∙

He hath received Israel his servant, being mindful of his mercy.

suscipit Israhel puerum suum memorari misericordiae suae

As he spoke to our fathers: to Abraham and to his seed for ever.

sicut locutus est ad patres nostros Abracham et semini eius in saecula ∙∙∙

And Mary abode with her about three months. And she returned to her own house.

Mansit autem Maria cum illa quassi mensibus tribus et reuersa est in domum suam

Now Elizabeth's full time of being delivered was come: and she brought forth a son.

Elizabeth autem inpletum est tempus pariendi et peperit filium

And her neighbors and kinsfolks heard that the Lord had shewed his great mercy towards her: and they congratulated with her.

et audierunt uicini et cognati eius quia magnificauit dns missericordiam suam cum illa et congratulabantur ei ∙

And it came to pass that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child: and they called him by his father's name Zachary.

Et factum est in die octauo uenerunt circumcidere puerum et uocabant eum Zachariam nomine patris sui

And his mother answering, said: Not so. But he shall be called John.

Et respondens mater eius dixit naquaquam sed uocabitur Iohannis

1

And they said to her: There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

Et dixerunt ad illam nemo est in cognatione qui uocetur hoc nomine

1

And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

Innuebant patri eius quem uellet uocari eum

1

And demanding a writing table, he wrote, saying: John is his name. And they all wondered.

et postulans pugillarem scripsit dicens Iohannis est nomen eius et mirati sunt uniuersi ∙

And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed: and he spoke, blessing God.

apertum est autem ilico os eius et lingua eius et loquebatur benedicens dm

1

65

And fear came upon all their neighbours: and all these things were noised abroad over all the hill country of Judea.

et factus est timor super omnes uicinos eorum et super omnia montana Iudae deuulgabantur omnia uerba haec

And all they that had heard them laid them up in their heart, saying: What an one, think ye, shall this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.

et possuerunt omnes qui audierunt in corde suo dicentes quid putas puer iste erit et enim manus dni erat cum illo ∙

And Zachary his father was filled with the Holy Ghost. And he prophesied, saying:

Et Zacharias pater eius inpletus est spu sco et profetauit dicens ∙

1

68

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel: because he hath visited and wrought the redemption of his people.

benedictus dns ds Israhel quia uissitauit et fecit redemptionem plebis suae

And hath raised up an horn of salvation to us, in the house of David his servant.

et erexit cornu salutis nobis in domu Dauid pueri sui ∙

As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets, who are from the beginning.

sicut locutus est per [os sanctorum qui a saeculo sunt prophetareum] eius

Salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all that hate us.

salutem ex inimicis nostris et de manu omnium qui nos oderunt

1

72

To perform mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy testament.

ad faciendam missericordiam cum patribus nostris et memorari testamenti sui sci

1

73

The oath, which he swore to Abraham our father, that he would grant to us.

iusiurandum quod iurauit ad Abrcham patrem nostrum

1

74

That being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we may serve him without fear:

daturum se nobis ut sine timore de manibus inimicorum nostrorum liberati ∙ seruiamus illi

In holiness and justice before him, all our days.

in scitate et iustitia coram ipso omnibus dieb: nostris

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt, go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways:

et tu puer profeta altissimi uocaberis praeibis enim ante faciem dni parare uias eius

77

To give knowledge of salvation to his people, unto the remission of their sins.

ad dandam scientiam salutis plebi eius in remissionem peccatorum eorum

1

78

Through the bowels of the mercy of our God, in which the Orient from on high hath visited us:

per uiscera missericordiae di ni in quibus uissitauit nos oriens ex alto

1

79

To enlighten them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death: to direct our feet into the way of peace.

et inluminare hiis qui in tenebris et umbra mortis sedent ad dirigendos pedes nostros in uiam pacis ∙

80

And the child grew and was strengthened in spirit: and was in the deserts until the day of his manifestation to Israel.

Puer autem crescebat et confortabatur in spu et erat in desertis usque in diem ostensionis suae ad Israhel ∙

Chapter 2

1

And it came to pass that in those days there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled.

Factum est autem in diebus illis exiit aedictum ac Cesare Agusto ut discriberetur uniuersus orbis

This enrolling was first made by Cyrinus, the governor of Syria.

haec discriptio prima facta est a praeside Siriae Quirno nomine

2

And all went to be enrolled, every one into his own city.

et ibant omnes ut profeterentur singuli in suam ciuitatem

2

4

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem: because he was of the house and family of David.

ascendit autem Ioseph a Galiliae de ciuitate Zazareth in Iudeam ciuitatem Dauid quae uocatur Bethlem Eo quod esset de domo et familia Dauid

To be enrolled with Mary his espoused wife, who was with child.

ut profetertur cum Maria disponsata sibi uxore praegnante de spu sco

And it came to pass that when they were there, her days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

factum est autem cum essent inpleti sunt dies ut pariret

2

And she brought forth her first born son and wrapped him up in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger: because there was no room for them in the inn.

et peperit filium suum primogenitum et pannis eum inuoluit et reclinauit eum et possuit in praesepio quia non erat ei locus in diuersorio

2

And there were in the same country shepherds watching and keeping the night watches over their flock.

et pastores erant in regione eadem uigilantes et custodientes uigilias noctis super gregem suum

2

And behold an angel of the Lord stood by them and the brightness of God shone round about them: and they feared with a great fear.

et ecce angelus dni stetit iuxta illos et claritas di circumfulsit illos et timuerunt timore magno

And the angel said to them: Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy that shall be to all the people:

et dixit illis angelus nolite timere ecce enim aeuangelizo uobis gaudium magnum quod erit omni populo

For, this day is born to you a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David.

quia natus est uobis hodie saluator qui est xps dni in ciuitate Dauid quae uocatur Bethlem ∙

And this shall be a sign unto you. You shall find the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger.

Et hoc uobis signum inueietis infantem pannis inuolutum et possitum in praesepio ∙

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army, praising God and saying:

et sibito facta est cum angelo multitudo militiae exercitus caelestis laudantium dm et dicentium

Glory to God in the highest: and on earth peace to men of good will.

Gloria in excelsis do et in terra pax hominibus bonae uoluntatis ∙

And it came to pass, after the angels departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another: Let us go over to Bethlehem and let us see this word that is come to pass, which the Lord hath shewed to us.

Et factum est ut descesserunt ab eis angeli in eaelum pastores loquebantur et inuincem dicentes — ∴ Transeamus usque Bethlem et uideamus hoc uerbum quod fecit dns et ostendit nobis

And they came with haste: and they found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger.

et uenerunt festinantes ∙ et inuerunt Mariam et Ioseph et infantem possitum in praesepio

And seeing, they understood of the word that had been spoken to them concerning this child.

uidentes autem cognouerunt de uerbo quod dictum erat illis de puero hoc ∙

And all that heard wondered: and at those things that were told them by the shepherds.

Et omnes qui audierunt mirati sunt et de his quae dicta erant a pastoribus ad ipsos

2

But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart.

Maria autem conseruabat omnia haec uerba conferens in corde suo ∙

And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

Et reuersi sunt pastores glorificantes et laudantes dm in omnibus quae audierant et uiderant sicut dictum est ad illos ∙∙∙

And after eight days were accomplished, that the child should be circumcised, his name was called JESUS, which was called by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Et postquam consummati sunt dies octo ut circumcideretur puer et uocatum est nomen eius ihs quod uocatum ÷  ab angelo priusquam in utero conciperetur

And after the days of her purification, according to the law of Moses, were accomplished, they carried him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord:

Et postquam inpleti sunt dies purgationis eius saecundum legem Moysi tulerunt illum in Hierusalem ut ad sisterent eum dno

As it is written in the law of the Lord: Every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord:

sicut scriptum est in lege dni ∙ Quia omne masculinum adaperiens uuluam scm dno uocabitur

2

24

And to offer a sacrifice, according as it is written in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons:

et ut darent hostiam secundum quod dictum est in lege dni par turturum aut duos pullos columbarum ∙

2

And behold there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon: and this man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel. And the Holy Ghost was in him.

Et ecce homo erat in Hierusalem cui nomen erat Simeon et homo iste iustus et timoratus expectans consulationem Israhel et sps scs erat in eo

And he had received an answer from the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.

Et responsum acciperat a spu sco non uisurum se mortem nisi prius uideret xpm dni

And he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when his parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law,

Et uenit in spu in templum et cum inducerent puerum ihm parentes eius ut facerent ea quae saecundum consuetudinem legis pro eo

He also took him into his arms and blessed God and said

Et ipse accipit eum in ulnas suas Et benedixit eum et dixit

2

Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word in peace:

nunc dimitte seruum tuum dne saecundum uerbum tuum in pace

2

30

Because my eyes have seen thy salvation,

Quia uiderunt oculi mei salutare tuum

2

31

Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples:

quod preparasti ante faciem omnium populorum

2

32

A light to the revelation of the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel.

lumen ad reuelationem Gentium et gloriam plebis tucem Israhel ∙

And his father and mother were wondering at those things which were spoken concerning him.

Et erat Ioseph et mater eius mirantes super quae dicebantur de illo ∙

And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother: Behold this child is set for the fall and for the resurrection of many in Israel and for a sign which shall be contradicted.

Et benedixit illis Simeon et dixit ad Mariam matrem eius ecce hic possitus est in ruinam et resurrectionem multorum in Israhel ∙ Et in signum cui contradicitur

And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts thoughts may be revealed.

et tuam ipsius animam pertransibit gladius ut reuelentur ex multis cordibus cogitationes

And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser. She was far advanced in years and had lived with her husband seven years from her virginity.

Et erat Anna profetiza filia Phanuel de tribu aser ∙ haec processerat in diebus multis et uixerat cum uiro suo annis septem a uirginitate sua ∙

And she was a widow until fourscore and four years: who departed not from the temple, by fastings and prayers serving night and day.

Et haec uidua usque ad annos octogenta quatuor quae non discendebat de templo ieiunis et obsecrationibus seruiens do nocte ac die

Now she, at the same hour, coming in, confessed to the Lord: and spoke of him to all that looked for the redemption of Israel.

et haec ipsa hora superueniens confitebatur dno et loquebatur de illo omnibus qui exspectabant redemptionem Israhelem

And after they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their city Nazareth.

et ut perfecerunt omnia saecundum legem dni reuersi sunt in Galileam in ciuitatem suam Nazareth ∙∙

And the child grew and waxed strong, full of wisdom: and the grace of God was in him.

Puer autem crescebat et confortebatur plenus sapientia et gratia di erat in illo ∙

And his parents went every year to Jerusalem, at the solemn day of the pasch.

Et ibant parentes eius per omnes annos in Hierusalem in die sollempnis paschae

And when he was twelve years old, they going up into Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast,

Et cum factus fuisset ihs annorum duodecim ascendentibus illis in Hierusolimam saecundum consuetudinem diei festi

And having fulfilled the days, when they returned, the child Jesus remained in Jerusalem. And his parents knew it not.

consummatisque diebus cum reuerterentur remansit puer ihs in Hierusalem et non cognouerunt parentes eius

And thinking that he was in the company, they came a day's journey and sought him among their kinsfolks and acquaintance.

existimantes autem illum esse in comitatu ∙ Uenerunt iter diei et requirebant eum inter cognatos et notos

And not finding him, they returned into Jerusalem, seeking him.

et non inuenientes reuersi sunt in Hierusalem requirentes eum ∙

And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them and asking them questions.

Et factum est post triduum inuenerunt illum in templo sedentem in medio doctorum audientem illos et interrogantem

And all that heard him were astonished at his wisdom and his answers.

stupebant autem omnes qui eim audiebant super prudentia et responsis eius

2

And seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: Son, why hast thou done so to us? Behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

Et Uidentes admirati sunt et cum uidissent eum expauerunt et dixit mater eius ad illum filii quid fecisti nobis ecce pater tuus et ego dolentes et tristes quaerebamus te

And he said to them: How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be about my father's business?

et ait ad illos quid est quod me quaerebatis nescibatis quia in hiis quae patris mei sunt oportet me esse

And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was subject to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart.

Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother tetrarch of Iturea and the country of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilina:

Under the high priests Anna and Caiphas: the word of the Lord was made unto John, the son of Zachary, in the desert.

And he came into all the country about the Jordan, preaching the baptism of penance for the remission of sins.

et uenit in omnem regionem Iordanis praedicans babtimum penitentiae in remissionem peccatorum ∙

As it was written in the book of the sayings of Isaias the prophet: A voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.

sicut scriptum est in libro sermonum Issaieae profetae Uox clamantes in deserto parate uiam dni rectas facite semitas eius

Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be brought low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways plain.

omnis uallis inplebitur et omnis mons et collis humiliabitur et erunt omnia praua in dirta et aspera in uias planas

And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

et uidebit omnis caro salutare di

He said therefore to the multitudes that went forth to be baptized by him: Ye offspring of vipers, who hath shewed you to flee from the wrath to come?

decebat ergo ad turbas quae exiebant ut babtizarentur ab ipso generatio uiperarum quod ostendit uobis fugere a futra ira ∙

Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of penance: and do not begin to say, We have Abraham for our father. For I say unto you that God is able of these stones, to raise up children to Abraham.

Facite ergo fructus dignus penitentiae et ne coeperitis dicere patrem habemus Abracham ∙ dico autem uobis quia potest ds de lapidibus istis suscitare filios Abracham

For now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit shall be cut down and cast into the fire.
